Active Immunity, Antigens and Antibodies
This is the Supplement extension of white blood cells' antibody production, and it turns on one relationship: a specific antigen shape is recognised by a specific, complementary antibody shape. Almost everything else in this section follows from getting that one sentence exactly right.
Antigens
Every pathogen carries its own antigens— molecules with a specific shape sitting on or in the pathogen. It’s this shape, not the pathogen as a whole, that the immune system actually recognises, which is why two different pathogens are dealt with as two separate problems rather than one general “infection response.”
Antibodies
Antibodies are proteins that bind to antigens. A given antibody’s binding site has a shape that’s complementary to one specific antigen’s shape — the two fit together the way a shape fits its own mould, and an antibody built for one antigen won’t reliably bind a different one with a different shape. That specificity is the entire point: it’s what lets the immune system target the right pathogen rather than reacting indiscriminately to everything.
Once binding happens, it does one of two things: it can lead directly to the destruction of the pathogen, or it marks the pathogen so that phagocytes engulf it. Either way, the important relationship to hold onto for an exam answer isn’t “antibodies fight disease” in general terms — it’s the specific chain of antigen shape, complementary antibody, binding, then destruction or marking.
Active immunity
Active immunity is defence against a pathogen built by the person’s own antibody production. It’s called active because your own immune system is doing the work, and it can develop in two ways: after actually being infected by a pathogen, or after vaccination. In both cases, the underlying biology is the same — the immune system meets an antigen and mounts a response against it.
What this sets up next
This page is the mechanism; the next two pages are what you do with it. Vaccination deliberately triggers this exact process using a weakened pathogen or its antigens, so the body is prepared before it ever meets the real thing. Passive immunity is the direct opposite — antibodies arrive ready-made from someone else, with none of the antigen-recognition process happening in your own body at all. Holding those two mechanisms clearly apart is most of what this whole section is testing.
