Features of Organisms

Classification becomes practical the moment you can take the features of an organism you’ve never seen before and use them to decide which group it belongs to. The aim was never to memorise the appearance of every species — it’s to learn the combination of features that defines each group, so an unfamiliar organism can still be classified correctly.

The groups covered in the rest of this topic — animals and plants, vertebrates, and arthropods for every candidate, and for Supplement candidates the five kingdoms, ferns and flowering plants, monocotyledons and dicotyledons, and viruses— all follow the same pattern. Each group is defined by a set of features, and no single feature on its own is reliable evidence. A whale living in water doesn’t make it a fish, and a bat that can fly doesn’t make it a bird — both are mammals, because the defining mammalian features are what actually decide the classification, not habitat or movement.

The central classification skill

When you’re shown an unfamiliar organism in an exam question, the reasoning is always the same five steps:

  1. Observe its visible features carefully.
  2. Identify the characteristics that are useful for classification.
  3. Compare those characteristics with the defining features of the possible groups.
  4. Use several features together where possible.
  5. Place the organism into the group that best matches the evidence.

That same reasoning connects species, dichotomous keys, vertebrates, arthropods, the kingdoms, and the plant groups covered on the pages that follow. Classification gets significantly easier once you stop trying to recognise individual organisms from memory and start recognising the combinations of features that define their groups instead.
