Vertebrate Groups
Vertebrates are animals with a vertebral column, or backbone. Five main vertebrate groups are required here — mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish — and classifying between them depends on combinations of features such as body covering, gas-exchange structures and reproduction, never on habitat alone.
Mammals
Mammals typically have hair or fur, lungs, internal fertilisation, and females with mammary glands that produce milk for their young. Most give birth to live young, although a small number lay eggs. Hair or fur and mammary glands are the two most useful mammalian features to reach for, precisely because habitat and movement can be so misleading here: a whale lives in water but is a mammal, and a bat flies but is also a mammal — both carry the defining mammalian features regardless.
Birds
Birds have feathers, a beak, wings, two legs, lungs, internal fertilisation, and eggs with protective shells. Not every bird can fly — penguins and ostriches are still birds — which is exactly why feathers are the single most reliable feature to use: no other vertebrate group in this list has them.
Reptiles
Reptiles typically have dry skin covered with scales, lungs, and internal fertilisation. Many lay eggs that can develop on land, though some give birth to live young. The dry, scaly skin is particularly useful visually — a snake and a lizard have very different body shapes, but both are still classified as reptiles from their underlying characteristics.
Amphibians
Amphibians typically have moist skin without scales, eggs usually laid in water, a life cycle strongly tied to water, young stages that commonly use gills, and adults that commonly use lungs and their skin for gas exchange. A frog shows this clearly: a tadpole is aquatic and gill-breathing, and as development proceeds the adult can spend far more time on land. Moist skin and a water-linked life cycle are what separate amphibians from reptiles.
Fish
Fish typically have fins, gills, scales in many species, and an aquatic habitat. Gills allow gas exchange with water, and fins help with movement, balance and control. Unlike amphibians, fish normally keep their aquatic adaptations throughout their whole life rather than changing as they develop.

Don’t classify an unfamiliar vertebrate from habitat or movement alone. “Lives in water” doesn’t automatically mean fish, and “can fly” doesn’t automatically mean bird — the defining biological features always provide stronger evidence than either.
