Adaptive Features
An adaptive feature is not just a feature that looks unusual or interesting. Cambridge’s definition has two parts that both have to hold: the feature must be inherited, and it must actually help the organism survive and reproduce in its own environment. Drop either half and the answer stops being about adaptation at all.
The definition, in full
An adaptive feature is an inherited feature that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment. Four ideas inside that sentence are each worth holding onto separately: the feature is inherited, it is a genuine feature of the organism, it contributes to survival and reproduction — not just one or the other — and its usefulness is tied to a specific environmental context. A feature that looks striking but does nothing for survival or reproduction is not, biologically, an adaptive feature; it is just a feature.
That environmental context matters more than it first appears. A feature can be genuinely advantageous in one environment and neutral, or even a disadvantage, in another. Thick fur is adaptive in a cold climate and a liability in a hot one — adaptiveness is never a property of the feature alone, only of the feature in relation to where the organism actually lives.
The reasoning chain examiners are testing
Cambridge routinely presents an organism you will never have studied before — a photograph, a diagram, or a short set of data — and asks you to work out why a particular feature helps it. The chain that gets full marks runs in one direction:
observed or supplied feature → environmental challenge → biological effect → advantage for survival or reproduction
A large exposed body surface, for example, is not itself the answer — the answer is that a large surface increases heat loss, and increased heat loss is an advantage specifically in a hot environment where overheating is the risk. Body colouring that matches the background is not the answer either — the answer is that matching colouring reduces how easily the organism is detected by predators or prey, which is what actually improves survival or feeding success. Even physiological data can carry the same chain: unusually concentrated urine in a dataset supports the inference of reduced water loss, which is an advantage in a dry environment.
The feature and the biological effect have to be genuinely connected by evidence you were actually given. Do not invent an adaptation the image or data does not support — a strong answer stays anchored to what was supplied and completes the chain fully, rather than guessing at an impressive-sounding advantage that was never shown.
What is not an adaptive feature
A useful change that happens within a single organism’s own lifetime is not automatically an inherited adaptive feature, even if it genuinely helps that individual survive. Acclimatisation, short-term physiological responses, and behaviour learned during a lifetime should not be relabelled as adaptation without evidence that the feature is actually passed on genetically. If a question’s scenario describes an organism changing during its own lifetime rather than a feature already present at birth, that is very unlikely to be the adaptive feature Cambridge wants named.
Don’t confuse
An adaptive feature is the inherited trait itself — a structure, a physiological trait, or a behaviour that is genetically passed on. Adaptation is a different idea: the population-level process, occurring over many generations through natural selection, by which a population becomes better suited to its environment. This page is about the feature; the process is covered on the natural selection page. It is also worth keeping fitness separate from ordinary physical strength — in this context it is shorthand for reproductive success in a given environment, nothing more specific than that.
